The Last Wednesday

Spencer and I went over to Sara's house for our last Wednesday play date before her new little man graces us with his presence. It was also out last play date at the house where she's lived since before getting married. To mark the day we made sugar cookies like we used to do and ordered our favorite pizza, a luxury we haven't afforded ourselves since having the kiddos. Even though we tried to make it memorable, it was hard to be nostalgic and reminisce since there's a one year old and a two year old running around, but now that we're back home it's starting to sink in.

They are only moving a few blocks away from their old house, so it's not that she's going too far away or anything- it's just all the memories that I have there. It was my home away from home for so long. When I graduated college and moved back in with my parents I would spend many nights there as an "escape" from feeling like I was still in high school. After I moved into my apartment during law school, I would go there to "escape" from the tedious life of a 1L. When I had to move back home because of my very unplanned pregnancy with Spencer, I spent many nights crying on her sofa snuggled up with her dogs. It was actually in her upstairs bathroom that she informed me my pregnancy test was indeed positive. After Spencer was born, her house was my place of refuge, I could go there and just be Katie instead of Katie, unwed single mother.

Good things always happened to me there. I'm not a lucky person, I never have been. I don't win contests, my slot machines never pour out the big bucks, and if a bird is flying above me and 100 other people- he'll poop on my head. But something about her house was lucky for me. I'm sure if I lived there I might feel differently, glad to get into a bigger house that has a kitchen large enough for a table and a hot water heater that doesn't go cold after 5 minutes. But that house has been the one constant thing in my life since graduating. When everything was in question and my world was spinning, I could always go there and feel at ease, just comforted by being there.

Next week when her new little boy enters this world, the final move will take place while she's still in the hospital. Most of their things are already there, but the "life blood" of their home is still at their old house. The new home is wonderful, beautiful, and spacious while the old one is small(er), crowded, and aging. But it was their starting off place, where they got engaged and where they started their real life together. It was where I started my real life, too. I'm excited to go to the new abode for our first Wednesday with three children instead of two, but I do feel like a huge chapter in our lives is closing. It's a grown up house and I still have a hard time seeing us as real adults. I often feel like I'm just playing a part in a play and any day now the curtain will close and I'll be an immature teenager again. Is that crazy? Am I the only one who feels that way?

I'm sure it's painfully obvious to anyone reading this that I have a difficult time accepting change. It's why I've let bad, bad relationships go on too, too long, why I have nightmares when even entertaining the thought of a new hair style, why I resisted getting a DVD player for years after they became standard fare (I had over 200 VHS tapes! I didn't want to start an entire new collection), why I keep my size 4 pants in the bottom of my drawer (because of course I'm going to fit into them one day), and why I insist on blowing out the number of candles of the age I'm turning on my birthday (I can still blow them all out, even with 27!). And as I get older I'm realizing that things are changing more often and much more quickly than I'm wanting it. I guess that's just a part of growing up and being a real adult.

But I'm a fake grown up, remember?

Show Us Where You Live Friday - The Entry Way

I don't have a foyer, I have an entryway. It's just a little nook carved out of the front of the house. Since there isn't all that much I can do, without it clashing with the front room, I've tried to take a less is more approach.

You come in and this is it. That's my MeMa's antique serving cart.

It was kind a little bland for my taste, so I put an antique mirror on top of it and fit pretty much exactly! It just gives it a little Ooomph without detracting from it's antique-iness.

I bought this vase on (in?) Murano- which a little island in Venice. They have the best hand blown glass there, it's just amazing. They give tours and show you how they make it- it's a really fascinating process. Their sister island, Burano, is famous for their lace.

So that's it- my foyer/entry way. Kinda boring huh?

Show Us Where You Live - The Yard

This week on Show Us Where You Live Friday is all about yards and garages. Well, I don't have a garage, but I do have a lot of yard- almost an acre and a half- to be exact.

front
View from the front porch. I took this picture awhile ago, that's why it doesn't really match the rest. My momnesia led me to believe that I had a lot of pictures of the front yard so I didn't need to take any more, but no, this is was the only one that shows more than closeup.

My bicycle planter. You have no idea how long it took me to put this thing together. I blame it on faulty directions, but I might have made some errors myself!

Kappa Kappa Gamma! The colors are wrong, but it's still the fleur-de-lis.

This is Spencer's flower stand. I let her water it, which she just loves, and then she tried to pluck them!

Crepe Myrtle in the front yard. I can't wait for it to bloom- early fall.

My July 4th Spirit, haha! And that's Spencer, coming to show me the flower she just picked. I have the hardest time keeping her from doing that, but my hurt just melts when she says "Flowee, prit-ee!" And then she pats her head, because she wants me to put one in her hair. She has a headband that has a flower on it, and to make her want to wear it, I showed her how pretty it was and how pretty it looked on her. Ever since then, when she sees a flowee, she wants to put it in her hair!

The backyard. You probably can't tell from this picture, but it's almost an entire acre.

That's a dogwood behind the slide, which is Virgina's State Flower, even though it's a tree!

On the screened in porch. Oh, how I love my screened in porch! It's probably my favorite thing about our house.

View of the backyard from the porch. That's a shed you see to your left, which is the home to many a creature. I don't want to destroy their thriving ecosystem, so I leave it alone, and they leave us alone.

So that's my yard. It's a fair amount to maintain, but Spencer and Vivi love it, and so do I. It really is kind of therapeutic , trying to keep all my flowers, trees, and grass alive while wrangling an almost two year old and Great Dane puppy, but I like knowing that I can do it!

So Maybe My Thumb is Light Green

When I began on my flower endeavor, I wasn't expecting all that much. But lo and behold, they're doing okay! Everyday I go and "commune" with them, give them water, food, and attention. It's taken a lot, but Spencer now knows not to pick the "fowee."

Show Us Where You Live Friday - Master Bedroom

So while I'm waiting for an update on my dad, I distracted myself by taking photos of my room. The master bedroom is the room of the day, although in my case, master bedroom just means a few extra square feet, no bathroom.

My chest of drawers, notice the pigs! The color of my walls is not coming out right in these pictures.

Up close and personal with my oinkers. I got the one on the right when I was in Peru for 5 cents. She was already chipped, I guess that's why it was so inexpensive, but haven't ever fixed it. I guess I think it's part of her charm!

My bed. You might notice there are no pillows on it, and that's because Spencer peed on them and they're in the wash right now. How could Spencer pee on both of my pillows? Well, it was right before her bath and she was running away, jumped on my bed and laid on the pillows. I picked her up and that's when I saw the lovely yellow pool of liquid that was puddled on my pillows. I was not happy.
I need a picture to go behind my bed, or maybe a few small pictures, any suggestions?

Closeup of the duvet.

Nightstand and hallway. See Spencer on Santa's lap in the hallway?

The tame side of my closest. Huggable Hangers are my friend!
So that's my room. It needs some accents, but for the most part I love it. It's dark at night and bright in the morning, waking up isn't too difficult, and that's what's really important, folks! haha!

Show Us Where You Live Friday - Bonus Room Edition

This week on Show Us Where You Live Friday, we have a choice between Bonus Room, Laundry Room, or Play Room. I will be showing you a few pictures from the laundry room and the bonus room/Spencer's play room. None of them are at all ready for internet photography, so you'll just be getting a few snippets of each. I'm afraid this is going to be pretty boring.

I guess we'll start with the bonus room, which will one day, hopefully soon, be Spencer's playroom. Right now, this is all it has in it:

An old abstract painting of mine, some old lamps, and this hideous sofa- which is waaaay more hideous without that $1 slipcover. This is the biggest room in the house, and I think it has a lot of potential. I just need some inspiration and money, ha!

This is one of my favorite pieces of furniture. It belonged to my Great-Aunt and it's so retro fabulous.

On to the laundry room!

I'm in the middle of of washing my towels! haha! But I really do love my washer and dryer, they're energy efficient, really quiet, and the dryer is super fast.

I have lots of hanging storage areas.

This is directly behind the washer/dryer, TONS of cabinet space. I love them so much, I don't think there are words to articulate it. You can never have too much cabinet space!

And that's it. A little boring, huh?

Show Us Where You Live Friday - The Bathrooms

Today we're showing/touring all of the bathrooms in the house. Since I only have 1.5, it won't take you very long. When I first moved in here the bathrooms were in terrible shape. Everything was brown and yellow, which I'm told was all the "rage" during the 60's and 70's. I've done A LOT of work on them, but there are a few more things I still need to do before I'll be really pleased.

The main bathroom. Or as I like to call it, the only bathroom with a shower/tub.

I took Spencer's potty off of the toilet for this picture, oops.

What I love most about my bathroom is the shower curtain rod- it's curved and gives you a lot more room to move. The shower head is one that conserves water, but still has good pressure.

I love pigs and I try to put little ones in very room. Most are very inconspicuous, but I still like having them there. See, he just blends right in! Funny story, but not; when I was in the 7th grade I convinced myself that my parents were going to get me a potbellied pig for my 13th birthday. It didn't matter that they repeatedly told me pigs would fly before they ever bought me one. I did NOT think it was funny when they gave me a stuffed animal pig with a bow around it's neck and a card that read "The Only Pig You'll Ever Get, Love, Mom and Dad." Talk about teenage, angsty drama!

This is the half bathroom, or as I like to call it, the W.C.

Please note the toilet seat lock. Yet somehow Spencer still managed to open it up far enough to put my keys in there!

My two little piggies and a basket of sample toiletries for any guests to use. I bought that basket for 25 cents when I was in Peru, and it's one of the best made baskets I've ever seen.
That's the end of my bathroom tour, I wish I had some more cool things to show ya'll, but my house was built in 1962, so I just have to work with what I've got!
