If She's Four, That Means I'm How Old?

Spencer insisted on having a red cake with colored flowers and fairies.  I have no clue where she got the idea for it, a dream perhaps, but she'd been talking about this cake for a good two months before her birthday.  What's a mom to do?  A friend of mine from high school made it for her and even though it was probably the strangest cake request she's ever had, she did an amazing job and it was super delicious.

I can't believe my little baby is four years old already.  I also can't believe that I was only 25 when I birthed her, especially now I'm just a few short months from turning really, really old.  Spencer grows up more and more every day, she's definitely four going on 14 and I'm feeling the need to press the pause button again.

Everything Changes, but the Pigtails Stay the Same

Before I start writing about Christmas, I have to get this post out onto the Internets. And then, the Season of Jolly may commence.

Every year on my birthday, my aunt, Spencer and I go to the pumpkin patch. It all started three years ago when my brother had a volleyball game on my birthday, my parents were going to his game, and I was a bit bummed out. So my aunt took off work and we decided to go to the pumpkin patch. Spencer's hair had just gotten long enough for pig tails and I was a little obsessed with them- so in they went.

The next year, my brother had a volleyball game again and so my aunt and I decided we'd make a tradition of it and go back to the pumpkin patch. I thought it would be cute to put her in pig tails again so the tradition would continue, even though she hadn't worn them in awhile. Since we had the tradition going, we went again this year on my (ugh!) 29th birthday. Well, Spencer hasn't worn pig tails since the last time we went, but I didn't care, a tradition was a tradition.

So now I have three years of Spencer wearing pig tails at the pumpkin patch on October 22 and I'm so glad that I do, because they are the only constant thing about her. I knew that she looked different than the first year we went, but I couldn't get over how much she'd grown up in since last year.

I'm ready for her to stop growing up now and just stay the same for awhile.  Me too, for that matter...

Look at This Stuff, Isn't it Neat?

Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?

For all of those who guessed it was Ariel on the cake, you are correct! But since I said the first person to guess would win the prize, the winner is Tri-Star from Loving Every Moment. Email me for your prize! Which is, thanks to my great swagbucks, a $5 gift Amazon gift card.

So how did Ariel end up looking like that? It's a rather lengthy story that I'm going to condense to spare you some time.  On Spencer's birthday we went on a mom and daughter trip to Williamsburg to go to Snow-to-Go, which is the best shaved ice on the planet. Plus they stuff it with soft serve ice cream (which don't get) and I knew Spencer would love it. The excursion took a bit longer than I planned on because we got a late a start and then a huge storm came as I was driving us home.  So when we finally made it to my parent's house, it was after 4pm.  When we got there, my mom reminded me that we needed to stop by another birthday party that was going on right then for another little girl at our church.  I was a little panicked because I needed to put Spencer's cake in the oven. My dad volunteered for the job and said he would put it in and take it out to cool and then I could ice it when we got back from the party. I was a little hesitant, as I always bake her birthday cake for her actual birthday family celebration party, but my dad said not to worry, it would be fine.

When we got back from the party my dad was standing in the kitchen and I could tell something was wrong.  He apologized a million times and then said Ariel's entire face had come off when he turned the pan over to slide out the cake.  The cake pan was in the shape of Ariel, with every one of her features very distinctive and defined.  When I looked at what was left, there was just a flat surface with some holes in it. I kinda freaked out, but not too much because I didn't want my dad to feel any worse than he already did.  So with no guide lines, I did the best I could.  Because of all the holes I had to fill, I ran out of icing and had to improvise even more than I already was doing.  And that's how I managed to create that beautiful specimen you saw before!

But Spencer didn't seem to mind, she said it was "so so beautiful!"

The Pumpkin Patch Birthday Trip

Our trip to the pumpkin patch was great! The weather was a perfect, breezy 78 degrees, the sun was shining, and the crowds were nonexistent. We got there around 2pm,, about an hour before the elementary schools let out, and we had the place almost to ourselves. I'm so glad we got there then, because by the time we left it was packed and the lines were long. The only complaint I have is that Spencer (who otherwise was an angel) was in one of her "I'm NEVER going to look at the camera and smile" moods. I took about 200 pictures, most of which are of the side of Spencer's face, or her back, as she'd whip right around as soon as she saw me with the camera. But if that's all I have to complain about, then I know I;m a very lucky mommy.

The outside of the Berry Farm. This is where we get all of our pumpkins, seasonal fruits,
and our Christmas tree.

There were so many pumpkins to choose from, I had a very difficult time making my decisions. I know I'd have bought many more if I could have carried them. As it was, I thought my arms were going to fall off hauling my two large pumpkins to the hay ride wagon, up to the weighing station and then to the car. I guess that's probably a good thing though, I don't really need, or can afford, twenty pumpkins, haha!

This was just a small portion of one field that they have. Unfortunately, I'm an anthropomorpher, and I kept imagining them all saying "Pick me, Pick me!"

It really was a gorgeous day. I think God was smiling on my 28th birthday :)

On the hay ride to pick out our pumpkins. Spence LOVED it! For the rest of the day, every time we'd see one passing us, she'd yell "Truckter!" and begin running towards it.

One of the rare pictures I got of her actually looking at me. I was bummed that it turned out kinda blurry, but oh well. The hay ride was super bumpy, and it was hard to keep my camera steady and focused, even in AI Servo.

Of course Spencer went right to the biggest pumpkin she saw! She spoke to it, gave it a hug, and then had me do the same. I would've taken it with us, but it was ridiculously heavy, and I just couldn't carry it. Luckily, Spence didn't seem to mind too much.

Another "Pangkin" friend she made along the way.

On our way back from the patch and she's still refusing to look at me. But she's still so darn cute.
__
The bunnies were a big hit with Spencer, those and the chickens were her favorites. I couldn't get any pictures with the chickens, as I was trying to keep her from getting her hands pecked. She'd run towards them, they'd run away, and she would yell "No, No, No Chickie!" The bunnies were a different story though, they really seemed to like Spencer- running up to her and staying there while they let her pet them.

There was a toddler area for the kids and they had this barrel/wagon/train ride. That's Spencer in the red barrel car. She had so much fun on this and since it wasn't crowded, the man driving the tractor, which was pulling all the cars, took them around for almost 10 minutes!

She took her driving very seriously- this was the only time she ever looked over at us! The rest of the time she was intently steering the wheel. At first I was a little nervous that she was going to be upset out there all by herself, but I was SO wrong. I think the only reason she didn't get really upset when the ride ended was because she was about to fall asleep.

And fall asleep she did! About 2 minutes into our drive home she just passed out.

I am so thankful that everything worked out as well as it did. I was a little nervous since more than a few of our outing type adventure trips often end with both of us in tears. Somehow everything just came together in the best possible way and I couldn't have asked for a better 28th birthday. This was the second year that we went to the pumpkin patch on my birthday, and I think we'll be doing it for (hopefully) many years to come!

It's Official

I am now officially 28 years old! I'm not sure if that deserves an exclamation point or not, but I'm trying to be positive here. I've been alive for 336 months and 10,220 days- which I think is pretty cool because my birthday is 10/22!

We had a really great day at the pumpkin patch, Spencer had a wonderful time, and I got some great pictures. I will get those up tomorrow, but I am worn out. After our pumpkin excursion I had to go to my 3 hour psych class that didn't get out until 9:30. But I wanted to thank everyone for the sweet birthday wishes, it means so much to me!

4 x 7 or 2 x 14

Tomorrow I turn 28. Spencer and I are going to the pumpkin patch with my aunt (just like we did last year) and then I have to go to class. I'm excited to get some pictures of Spencie and compare them to last year. Of course one big difference is that last year it was COLD and Spencer was in a big red winter coat and this year it's supposed to be 80 degrees! I've never picked pumpkins when it was that hot, but there's first time for everything, right? I've been working on my list and I will get those up tomorrow night.

tHere are some pictures of Spencer on my birthday last year when we are at the pumpkin patch.

She's growing up so fast! Which of course means that I'm also getting older just as fast!

Weekend Update

October has always been my favorite month, it's my birthday month! As I get older though, getting another year older doesn't sound as wonderful as it used to sound. The big day is Thursday and I'll be 28.

28.

It sends shivers down my spine to say that. I have class that day and my brother has a volleyball game, so I don't think there will be any celebrating until the weekend. But I have my marathon class on Saturday, so who knows when I'll get to blow out my 28 candles.

This weekend we celebrated my brother's birthday, he turned 18 last week. He never grows tired of reminding me that I'm OLD. No matter how old he gets, I'll always be SO much older. We went to my aunt's house for dinner and spent today with her. We stayed at my parent's house this weekend, I was just still really tired and I wanted a break from being the grown up for awhile. It's nice to have a day off sometimes. Now we're back home and it's a little lonely after being around the constant buzz of a full house.

Tomorrow I need to do some laundry and house week. After a week of being sick, not much got done around here. I also need to start working on making my 28 Things to in My 28th Year list. A few things that I didn't get done last year will carry over, but does anyone have some good ideas about why I should add to my list? I'm amenable to any suggestions, except jumping out of an airplane! Sorry this was like the most boring post ever!

P.S. What were Balloon Boy's parents thinking? I'm so annoyed that I wasted all those hours watching CNN hoping he was safe. I mean, I'm definitely glad he's okay, but I'm angry that it was all a hoax planned by his father. Ugh! What is wrong with some people?

Spencer's Birthday Party!

Spencer's birthday party, celebrating her 2nd year, was last Saturday. It was a beautiful day, in the mid 80's (which is very cool for Virginia in July) and it was a great party.
I had a local farm bring their mini animals and some others, for a petting zoo party. They brought pigs, goats, a lamb, bunnies, chickens, a mini horse, a pony, an alpaca, and a donkey! There were 10 kids and about 30 adults, so we had a full house, um yard.

The backyard before the party started.

Some of the animals "grazing." I really want a farm now. Well, except for the poop!

Moriah the Pig. She liked to have her belly rubbed, and when you were doing it just right, she'd snort, roll over, and pass out. It was so cute! The other picture is of Spencer playing dress up with the mini horse, who was so gentle and sweet.

That's the Alpaca, and she liked to hum. If you hummed, she'd join right in and try to match your tune.

Chickens, roosters, bunnies and pigs.

One of the goats and the lamb.

A chicken, isn't he/she cool looking? And that's Spencer trying to give one of the bunnies a kiss.

Patting the donkey with one hand, a chip in the other!

She kept walking back to the chip table, she couldn't resist them.

She was very nervous on the pony. Thankfully, she didn't cry, but she didn't smile either.

Can you see her red cowgirl boots?

SO serious! She still won't smile for the camera, or look at it for that matter.

Her cake. Now that looks like a pig!

Blowing out her candle. I don't know why the cake isn't facing her. Ooops.

Enjoying her sugar - the rush did not end until MUCH later that night! It was a really wonderful day, stressful and exhausting, but well worth it.

Us. (How do like that Big Gulp!? ha!)
