So You Think You Can Dance - Top 20 Recap

Tonight we're going to find out who are Top 20 dancers are! Luckily for us, it's only an hour long episode, so hopefully there won't be too much filler and fluff. We pick up where we left off last night, Janette Manara is walking down the longest hallway of her life.

Janette Manara - She tells us how these past few weeks have been really rough in her- she was in a car accident and her boyfriend of 4 year broke up with her. Nigel doesn't waste too much time, he tell hers that he's been impressed with her since her audition and that she's worked hard in Vegas. He thinks she's got that thing that will make people pick up the phone and vote for her, and with that, Jennette is the first dancer in the Top 20! I'm happy for her, not only does she do a killer Nigel impression, but she's auditioned many times before this and has always been eliminated. Yea for perseverance!

Diana Vaden - We first saw her dancing to Hurt So Bad by Kina in LA. Debbie Allen says that she has so much potential and she's made great improvements since she got to Vegas, but unfortunately, she will not be going on. Lil' C tells her to use this as a motivation, by telling herself that "she wasn't good enough" to become a better dancer. Nigel tells her that he will see her next season, aww, that was nice. And lets not forget, Season 6 has already begun auditions- Fox plans to air it in the Fall!

Vitolio Jeune - I don't remember any of his performances from the first round of auditions, but he's from Haiti and his mother died when he was a little boy. Lil' C says that he was just kind of dancing in the background, under the radar, and they didn't get to see him Bring It, until the last day. But they see great potential and he has an amazing personality, which they hope he will be able to show the audience, because he's in the Top 20!

Kayla Rodomski - Her grandpa was the one who cried when she made it to Vegas. Mia Michaels is giving the critique, so who knows what she's going to say. She starts of by telling Kayla that she loves men and male dancers because of their strength and beauty- she gets them more than the female dancers. Which is why she was surprised when she felt a connection with her and was moved by her dancing. She's so happy that Kayla tried out because she can't wait for America to feel the same way about her that she does. That was surprisingly nice for Mia, and there were no odd compliments like "you're a disastrous weirdo that I want to see more of."

Kuponohi'ipoi Aweau - He's the dancer from Hawaii who reminds me of Mark from Season 4. In the first audition he had long hair and wasn't clean shaven, but when he got to Vegas he cut it all of and an now sports a manscaped face! He shows us his To Do List that he made after being selected to go to Vegas. It says Shave, iPod, Make 1st cut, Practice Solo, LIVE ON THE STAGE!!!, Breathe, Smile, Make Top 20!!!. That's cute. Adam Shankman is giving the critique and he goes back to Pono's audition, where the judges were divided on liking him. Mary thought he was too feminine and others felt he was a distracting dancer. Adam goes on to say that he thinks Poi is now one of the strongest male dancers on the stage and the producers of SYTYCD are going to have a challenge trying to get his name to be audience/tv friendly. He's in the Top 20!

Montage of Dancers Getting into the Top 20

  • Paris Torres

  • Jeanine Mason

  • Ade Obayomi

  • Karla Garcia

  • Jonathan Platero

Brandon Bryant - Mia starts off telling him that she can't "take him" and "what he brings to the floor, as an artist." She can't stand the way he dances, and he annoys the S*** out of her. Wow, really nice. She also hates his fake smile and thinks there's a real attitude underneath it. Debbie Allen interrupts Mia saying that she gets his dancing- Mia talks over top of her, Nigel tells Mia to be quiet. Debbie says she loves his masculine dancing and his power, how he soars, and she doesn't judge his personality. Lil' C says he just hasn't been impressed by him yet. Mary interrupts Lil' C and she says she just "can't listen to this crap anymore!" She tells Brandon that he's an amazing dancer, and he shouldn't have to listen to these people who are tearing him down. Nigel tells him he's made it into the Top 20! Wow, they brought the drama out tonight. Mia was just nasty in her critique, it's supposed to be constructive criticism, not breaking you down.

Tony Bellisimo - I'm honestly shocked that he's made it this far, but he's grown on me. Before finding out if he's made it, he tells Cat that his mind is on his brother, who's in Afghanistan. He knows that if his brother knew that he'd made it this far, he'd be breaking down the doors to come and watch. He goes out on stage and Nigel begins telling him that he's not the best dancer, he doesn't have the greatest technique, but there's just something about him. I get that, I've warmed up to him and his style and now I think I like him. Although if one of the Kasprzak brothers doesn't make it, I will not be happy that Tony took his place.

More Top 20 Dancers

Ashley Valero - She's auditioned four times before and has always been cut. Mary says that she's a fighter and has improved so much. She thinks this will be her last audition, it's the end of the road for her... Pause... because she's in the Top 20! I love those kind of stories.

Randi Strong-Evans - Mia tells her that she's like a tigress, she has the strength to be that powerful, but she's not quite there yet. She needs to commit to her artistry like she's committed to her Unitards, haha, and if she does that, she will become an amazing dancer. Randi starts to cry because she thinks she's being cut, but Mia pulled a fast one, and they've decided that they love her and they think America is going to love her too. She's in the Top 20.

Alex Wong- If he doesn't make it, then there's just something completely wrong. He goes on stage and Nigel asks him if he's under contract with the Miami Ballet Company, and he says he is. Nigel called the artistic director and asked him if they would let Alex out his contract for the short period of the series, but he said no, Alex was too valuable to them. NO!!!! Nigel says that as soon as his contract expires he will be welcomed back onto SYTYCD. Alex is crying, he feels trapped by ballet and was really looking forward to being able to explore other areas of dance. They tell him to be proud that he's one of America's premier dancers and to use this time to get even better. I'm sad. I think he was one of the guys I was most looking forward to seeing dance in front of me every week. He walks off stage to Save You by Kelly Clarkson.

Dancers Get Eliminated

Philip Chbeeb - He's amazed he's gotten this far, since he taught himself to dance in his bedroom- he didn't go to dance classes. He is the best Popper I have ever seen, he does the coolest looking moves, and he's nice. Adam tells him that usually Poppers, or Trick Dancers, can't compete on the same level of competition in other dance styles. But somehow, not only can Phillip compete, he actually really good at other styles. He says what I think the audience has known all along, he is the Top 20.

Asuka Kondoh - Going to the Top 20! I'm happy for her, she was really good. But Nigel also had a thing for her.

Danielle Peig - She's going home and she's devastated, sobbing backstage. I feel so sorry for her, she looks so sad. It must be really horrible to get that far only to not make it in the end

Evan & Ryan Kasprzak - I HATE that they're doing this again! Last year it was best friends Katee and Natalie competing for the final spot, and now it's the cutest brothers ever competing for it. Both the brothers are crying, they're each rooting for the other one. They walk on stage with their arms wrapped around each other. Nigel tells Ryan that it was his choreography that got his brother into the Top 20 of SYTYCD, Evan is in Ryan is out. I new it, darn you Tony Bellisimo. The bros hug and Nigel tells Ryan that he's a very gifted and talented dancer and choreographer- he doesn't always need to wear his hat. (Because he's self-conscious about being bald) Ryan takes his hat off in celebration of his brother.
